Ayatul Kursi – Meaning, Tafsir and Virtues

Ayatul Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255) is one of the most powerful verses of the Qur’an. It describes the absolute majesty, knowledge and sovereignty of Allah (c.c.), and serves as a protection, a source of calmness and a reminder of divine guardianship. Muslims around the world recite it in the morning, evening, before sleep and as part of their daily dhikr.

Meaning (English Translation)
“Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
Tafsir (Simple Explanation)
1. Absolute Oneness of Allah (c.c.)
The verse begins by affirming pure tawhid:
Allah (c.c.) is the only true God, without partner, helper or equal.
2. Al-Hayy and Al-Qayyum
These two names express the core attributes of Allah (c.c.):
- Al-Hayy – The Ever-Living who never dies
- Al-Qayyum – The One who sustains everything in existence
Nothing can exist or continue without His will.
3. He Never Sleeps
“Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him”
This means Allah (c.c.) is never unaware, never absent, never unable.
4. Complete Ownership
“To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth”
Everything you see or cannot see is His creation and under His authority.
5. No Intercession Except by His Permission
Even the greatest angels cannot act without His command.
This shows His absolute control over the unseen and the Hereafter.
6. Infinite Knowledge
“He knows what is before them and what is behind them”
Allah (c.c.) knows the past, present, future, and what remains hidden from creation.
7. The Kursi
“His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth”
Scholars explain Kursi as:
- A symbol of Allah’s vast authority
- Greater than the entire universe
- Beyond human comprehension
8. Preservation Is Easy for Him
Guarding the heavens and earth does not tire Him, showing limitless power.
